Ski Trip

Dave says: January hasn't been too bad this year in Seattle. We've had a few dark drizzly days (including the last couple of Saturdays) but also some nice days mixed in. The temperatures haven't been too cold either with most days in the mid 40s or 50s. Chris and Sarah invited us up to Mt. Baker for the weekend and we had a great trip.

We drove up to a rented cabin on Friday evening and cooked some dinner. On Saturday morning, it was raining pretty heavily but we took Chris' Subaru up through some wet roads and a bit of ice to a trailhead for some hiking. We made it several miles but couldn't quite make it to the end due to a creek that had turned into a raging river due to all the rain. The cabin's hot tub was a nice way to relax afterwards and the stove in the cabin worked so well that it was like a sweat lodge in the evening.

The next day, we awoke to sunny skies and warm temperatures that made it feel like "Juneuary." We drove up to Mt. Baker and hit the slopes. The snow was soft and pretty slushy but not too bad although it was definitely getting a bit thin in places. We started with some easy greens but worked our way up to blues and by lunch time were enjoying some of the blacks quite a bit. The views off the top of the mountain were incredible. We also saw a boy who missed getting off the lift get rescued in a half-hour operation that involved us sitting on the chairlift for a long time until he was roped down. Overall, it was a great weekend getaway with some fun friends.

IVF Part 1: Waiting, Miscarriage, IUI, and Finally IVF

Alisha says: Dave and I have wanted to have a baby for several years now. After we didn’t become pregnant after a while I started using clomid to see if that would help. I did get pregnant on clomid but had a blighted ovum and miscarried at eight weeks.  I thought that I would get pregnant soon after the miscarriage but as the months passed, even on increasing doses of clomid and nothing I knew it was time to see someone. When moving to Seattle we knew it was time to see a specialist to get some help. I am so glad that I found the clinic that I did. I choose to go to Overlake Reproductive Health. They have been great, a bit expensive, but great. I have been there so many times that I basically know the name of everyone who works there. My doctor, Dr. Rehman, is really knowledgeable and good at taking his time to get to know you and explain things. The receptionists Melissa and Teesha are awesome; they are always good for a laugh. The medical assistants are great and the two nurses who you actually see the most, Jo and Julie are exceptional.

Overlake Reproductive Health Staff

I had to do a bunch of baseline blood tests, diagnostic blood tests, ultrasounds, HSG, SGH before having a re conference with Dr. Rehman. Basically all of the tests confirmed what I had suspected and that was that I had Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS. PCOS makes it hard to get pregnant because your hormones are out of balance resulting in many small cysts on the ovaries and not ovulating on a regular basis. Because I had already done many months of clomid cycles and still nothing, we decided to move forward to the next step and try a few rounds of intrauterine insemination or IUI. I was hopeful that this would work for us but after two rounds we were still not pregnant. We actually could have done one more round of IUI but around early December Dave accepted a position at the University of Arizona and we knew that we would then be moving in June. We were anxious to be pregnant before moving and I wanted to hopefully finish the process at Overlake because I had been going there since we moved to Seattle, they had done all my testing, I knew everyone and was comfortable and I didn’t want to have to search for a new fertility clinic in Phoenix and was afraid of the delay that there would be in finding a new clinic and then how long it would take before things got rolling at a new clinic so we made a huge decision and decided to move forward with in vitro fertilization or IVF in January. IVF is an extremely expensive procedure (on top of all that we had already spent) but we both felt good about it. The way that they do it at this clinic it is a three month process from the start to embryo transfer. At this clinic they freeze all of the embryos after egg retrieval and then wait until the next cycle before transferring them back. They are finding that this is safer for both the mom and the baby because they aren’t transferring the embryos directly back after you have used all of the stimulating medications.

Getting ready for IVF is a bit overwhelming. I received a giant box of medication that made me almost cry when I opened it. However my clinic is awesome and they do an injection training where they go through each medication and show you how to use it. They also provide very detailed instructions so that you are giving the right meds in the right dose at the right time.  Friday, January 9th I gave myself my first injection. Luckily the needles are tiny and it really wasn’t too bad. I did get a few bruises and my stomach was tender around the injection sites.  A typical day was follistim injection in the morning followed in the evening by a menopur injection. After a few days another injection called ganerelix was also given in the evening. The menopur left a stinging/burning sensation that I found was almost eliminated if I iced the area for a few minutes before giving the injection.

Lots of expensive medication

After a few days of injections I began going to the clinic daily for a blood draw/ultrasound so that they could monitor my response to the meds and monitor the development of the eggs. After my second blood draw/ultrasound my estrogen was extremely high and I was responding a little too well to the meds so they cut my already low dose of follistim down even more.  I already know almost everyone at the clinic really well but after going there every day that week I took some cookies to those who had to work on Saturday. At my appointment on Sunday Jo, my nurse/ivf coordinator, said that I was ready to do the ovulation trigger medication and that my retrieval would be scheduled for Tuesday. Because I stimulated so well I was at risk for OHSS so they triggered me for ovulation with a medication called Lupron. It is given in two doses exactly 36 and 24 hours prior to retrieval so my first dose I had to get up and inject at 1:15 am in the morning. Monday I had to go in just for some blood work and then Dave and I went to Snoqualmie to ride our hardtail mountain bikes on a path. We planned to be back to the car in time for me to give my 2nd trigger injection but I took it with me just in case which turned out to be a good thing. First of all we got rained on really hard for a little bit but then it stopped and we had a nice ride for a while. On the way back to the car I got a flat tire and so there we were on the side of the path with Dave fixing my tire and me giving myself my injection.  I felt pretty good through the stimulation phase, I was worried that all the hormones would make me a crazy person but emotionally I felt fine. Physically, as time went on I began to feel a bit different but generally okay. I still stayed active but just toned it down and listened to my body, I ran the first few days but stopped when the jarring of running became uncomfortable then we did a few bike rides and some walks. In total I gave myself 37 injections, had 11 blood draws (19 vials), 6 ultrasounds and 1 egg retrieval.

And So It Continues

Alisha says: Welcome to 2015! I can't think of a better way to start the new year than by getting outside and breathing in some fresh air. Everyone is describing this winter as being very mild, as this is our first winter here we don't have much to compare it to but I have to agree because it has not been as cold or rainy as I was expecting. In fact New Year's day was a perfect example, we hiked Ira Springs to Mason Lake under a clear blue sky. The upper slopes of the trail were covered in snow but because of the uphill effort and the sun we were actually rather hot.

Another hike that we recently did was Heather Lake. It did look like it was going to be a drizzly day on that particular day but we didn't really get rained on while hiking. It was a bit foggy which made for a different yet also beautiful time as we hiked through the misty forest and when we arrived at the lake it looked really mysterious and beautiful at the same time.

Christmas

Alisha says:

Part 1: Phoenix - We decided to head back to the sunshine for Christmas break. When booking flights a while ago I choose the least expensive non stop flight which ended up being a 6:00 am flight so by the time you plan in driving time, parking/shuttle ride, checking bags we ended up with a 3:20 am wake up call. The first thing we did in Phoenix was attend Allie's dance recital. It was pretty adorable watching them spin around. We followed that up with a nice hike with Tom in the Superstitions.

Part 2: Tucson - The next day we headed to Tucson where we had planned to spend a couple of days riding bikes. I was really disappointed when it rained on and off the whole first day we were there. We salvaged the day by visiting a few friends and taking a walk in Sabino Canyon. Luckily the rain cleared out and for the next three days we were able to ride a lot of my favorite old training roads. I was feeling the three consecutive days of three hour rides by the end but I loved every minute of it! I also decided to join some friends for a nine mile run on our last morning there. Dave's entire family joined us in Tucson and we visited the zoo and attended the Tucson Institute of Jazz concert to watch Daniel play the trumpet.

Part 3: Puerto Penasco, Mexico - We then traveled to Rocky Point Mexico where we were treated to a fancy top story condo at the Sonoran Sun resort. It was big enough to sleep all 12 of us and included a huge balcony complete with a hot tube! We had a wonderful time doing lots of activities. The beach was beautiful and filled with lots of fun shells to look at, we also enjoyed running along the beach in the mornings when the tide was out. Swimming in the heated pool and lounging in the jacuzzi with all of the little kids was great. Dave's favorite activity was renting atv's and driving them in the sand dunes. The first day we rented a four seater and drove around with Christine and Parker and then the next day we went back and rented an atv for Dave and I and Christine rented a four seater for her family. Dave even got a massage on the beach!

Part 4: Phoenix - It was back to Phoenix on Christmas Eve. We woke up on Christmas morning and went over to Christine's to watch her kids open their gifts. Anne and Venice cooked up a delicious meal that we enjoyed in the afternoon before being dropped off in the late afternoon at the airport for our return flight home. We did have a layover in Vegas where our next flight was slightly delayed. Dave was hungry so we got some airport food. We shared the exact same dish which didn't bother me but came back to haunt Dave as I woke up to him using the barf bag on the next flight, ugg. Luckily he was fine once he got it out of his system. Other than that last part we had a wonderful trip!

From 80 Degrees to Snow

Alisha says: We were greeted when we landed back in Seattle with lots of rain and the next day we woke up to a little bit of snow. Not to be deterred we layered up and went walking around some of the parks that we haven't checked out yet. We walked around Marymoor Park and Bridle Trails State Park.

Dave and I have been teaching primary basically since we moved up here. I love our little class of 5-7 year olds. They each have their own little personalities and are so cute. As part of the lesson they built a pretty good church out of blocks, Dave was impressed so we took a class photo of it.

Thanksgiving

Dave says: For the week of Thanksgiving we headed down to Arizona for some sunshine. We enjoyed temperatures reaching the 70s and even low 80s and Alisha was even wearing her shorts. We went on two nice hikes with my mom and dad. The first involved a 4x4 experience out towards WoodPecker Mine to the east and we found an old mine although it turned out to be a different one. We were looking for some amethyst which we didn't find but my mom did come across an old pocket watch in the mining ruins.

The second hike was southeast of Phoenix and took us into Hidden Canyon for a really nice hike in the canyon including a section that slotted down pretty tight. On Thanksgiving we made it out to the Boyce Thompson Arboretum which is one of my family's favorite spots. The desert is really pretty out there we had a nice picnic. We took a walk on some of the trails and my dad even caught a snake which Alisha decided that she wanted to hold (more brave than me).

It was fun to spend time with family. We had a big Thanksgiving dinner at my uncle's house. We also made it to Christine's kids soccer games and to one of Daniel's band concerts. We stayed with my grandparents who always treat us really well when we are in town.

We also made it down to Tucson for a day trip to visit the U of A and connect with many of the great professors and students that we are friends. I still have research projects with many people there. Also, my cohort members Mike and Scott have both recently received job offers so it was fun to be there to congratulate them. Overall, it was an exceptional week!

Veteran's Day Week

Alisha says: On Veteran's Day we took a drive to check out Snoqualmie Falls. It is a rather impressive water fall that is just off the I-90. Later that week we went to the climbing gym with Sarah and Chris. We have done this a few times and it is always really fun. I think we are going to take up climbing as a winter activity to do when it is cold and rainy. Finally to wrap up the week we did a nice hike to Teneriffe Falls. Part of it was frozen so there were some ice-sickles but still lots of water flowing. It was really pretty with the sun shining on it and you can get really close which seemed cool until chunks of the ice were breaking off and crashing down.
